Save the date: when to send one in the Philippines, what to write, and what it costs

When to send a save the date for a Philippine wedding, who gets one, what to include, English and Taglish wording, and card vs digital costs checked in 2026.

The Ceremo Team9 min read

A save the date is a short early notice that tells guests your wedding date and city before the formal invitation. For a Philippine wedding, send it six to eight months ahead, or 8 to 12 months if guests will travel or live abroad. Send it only to people you will definitely invite, then follow with the invitation.

A save the date can be a printed card, an image in Messenger or a simple web page. To see what the page version looks like on a phone, open the Heirloom sample invitation. Its cover already carries the names, the date, the venue and a countdown.

What is a save the date?

It's an announcement, sent months early, that asks guests to keep one day free. It doesn't ask anyone to reply.

That makes it different from the invitation, which comes later and carries the details: ceremony time, reception venue, dress code, the RSVP. Philippine weddings have done fine without save the dates for a long time, so treat it as optional. It earns its place when guests need lead time: an out-of-town wedding, a date near Christmas or Holy Week, or family working abroad.

That last group is large. The Philippine Statistics Authority counted 2.19 million overseas Filipino workers in 2024, and many of them have to file leave and buy a flight home months ahead. A tita in Riyadh can't come home on ten weeks' notice.

When should you send save the dates in the Philippines?

Six to eight months before the wedding is the window Philippine wedding site Bride & Breakfast gives. US guides split it by how far guests travel. Zola and Paperless Post say 4 to 6 months for a local wedding and 8 to 12 months for a destination one, and Paperless Post suggests close to a year when the wedding is in another country, so guests can sort out passports and travel.

Your situationSend the save the date
Local wedding, most guests nearby6 to 8 months before
Destination wedding (Boracay, Palawan, Bohol, Baguio)8 to 12 months before
Many guests abroad (OFWs, relatives in the US, Canada)10 to 12 months before
Wedding in December or near a long weekendAt the early end: 8+ months
Wedding less than 4 months awaySkip it, send the invitation

Don't go too far either way. Paperlust warns against sending 14 or 15 months out, when plans may still change and guests may forget, and calls anything within four months too late. At that point the save the date lands on top of the invitation, which goes out 10 to 12 weeks before the wedding (the timing in our RSVP guide).

So if your wedding is in February 2027, the save the date goes out between June and August 2026, and the invitation in late November or early December.

Who gets a save the date?

Only the people you will definitely invite. Zola puts it firmly: never send one to anyone who is only maybe on your list. A save the date is a promise, and taking it back later hurts more than never sending it.

That means your guest list has to be settled before the first one goes out, at least the "definitely" part. A few practical rules:

  • One per household, the same way you'll send the invitation.
  • If a guest can bring a partner, name the partner now. Guests plan around what the save the date says.
  • Ask your ninongs and ninangs in person first. The save the date is not how you ask someone to be a principal sponsor; it follows the yes.
  • Skip it for guests who already told you they can't come.

What should a save the date include?

Keep it short. Guests should get it in five seconds.

  1. Your names, first names are fine.
  2. The date, with the day of the week.
  3. The city or venue, if booked. A church and a city is enough.
  4. "Formal invitation to follow."
  5. A link to your wedding website, if you have one.

Leave out the ceremony time, the dress code, the gift note and anything that isn't final yet. Zola makes the same point: the start time and unconfirmed details can wait. Each extra line is one more thing to correct if plans move.

Save the date wording samples in English and Taglish

Swap in your own names, date and place. The Taglish ones read better in Messenger than on a formal card.

Classic, for a printed card:

Save the date
[Name] and [Name]
are getting married
Saturday, 20 February 2027
Tagaytay City
Formal invitation to follow

Relaxed English:

We're getting married! Please keep [date] free for us in [city]. Invitation and details to follow.

For guests abroad:

Save the date: [date], [city]. We're telling you early so you can file your leave and book your flight home. The formal invitation will follow.

Taglish, warm:

Save the date! Ikakasal na kami! [Date] sa [city]. Sana makasama ka namin. Formal invitation to follow.

Taglish, for titos and titas abroad:

Tita, Tito, save the date po! [Date] sa [city]. Sinabi na namin nang maaga para makapag-file kayo ng leave at makapag-book ng flight pauwi. Susunod po ang formal invitation.

Taglish, playful:

Tuloy na tuloy na! [Name] & [Name], [date], [city]. I-block mo na sa calendar mo. Invitation to follow.

A covering message when you send a digital one:

Hi [name]! Ito na po ang save the date namin. Wala pang kailangang i-reply. Susunod na lang ang invitation with RSVP.

Keep that last line. Without it, some guests reply "Yes, attending!" in the thread, and you end up tracking RSVPs you haven't asked for yet. For wording on the invitation itself, see our invitation wording samples.

Card, digital, video or website: which format?

A digital save the date is the easy default, with a few printed for the guests who need paper. Messenger's ad reach equals 83.3 percent of Filipino adults in DataReportal's 2026 count, so a link or image in a private message reaches almost everyone. The exceptions are the guests who get printed invitations anyway: elders and sponsors. Our digital vs printed invitations guide runs the full numbers for 150 guests.

A web page has one advantage the others don't. When the invitation is ready, the same link can turn into it, so guests who saved the link don't need a new one.

Where do the photos come from?

The timing rarely works. Many couples want prenup photos on the save the date, but our prenup photoshoot guide puts the shoot three to five months before the wedding, and editing takes weeks more. By then, the save the date should already be out.

You have three ways around it:

  • Book the prenup shoot early, at least eight months out, if the save the date photo matters to you.
  • Use a good phone photo from the proposal or a recent trip. Guests care about the date more than the lighting.
  • Go photo-free. A type-only design with your names and the date looks deliberate, and it's the fastest to make.

Save the prenup photos for the invitation, which goes out months later.

What if plans change after you've sent them?

Tell guests directly and quickly. A new date deserves a personal message or a call, especially to sponsors and to anyone who has already filed leave or bought a ticket. A group-chat announcement is fine as a backup.

Printed cards can't be corrected once they're out, so a date change means a second mailing. A save-the-date web page can be edited, and anyone who opens the link again sees the new date.

Where Ceremo fits

If all you need is an image for Messenger, Canva is free and enough. If you want a save the date that becomes your invitation later, Ceremo has a Save the Date mode, free on every plan.

Switch it on from the Share tab of the design studio and your invitation goes live as a save the date. Guests who open the link see only the cover: your names, the date, the venue if you want it shown, a countdown and a "Formal invitation to follow" line. There's no menu, no RSVP and no other section yet. You can pick one of five layouts (Portrait, Full bleed, Card, Stamp or Type), add a photo or go type-only, and reword the title, the line above your names, the closing line and the sign-off. When you paste the link in Messenger, its preview card shows the save-the-date line and your date too.

When your invitation is ready, switch the mode off. The same link now opens the full invitation, and each household gets its own RSVP link. Browse the sample invitations to choose a design, or see more wedding invitation examples. Then start your wedding website and send the save the date this week. Ceremo is free for up to 50 guests; larger lists need Premium, a one-time ₱2,499.

Frequently asked questions

When should we send save the dates for a wedding in the Philippines?

Six to eight months before the wedding, the window Bride & Breakfast recommends. Go to 8 to 12 months if the wedding is out of town or many guests live abroad, and skip the save the date if the wedding is less than four months away.

Is a save the date required?

No. It is optional, and you can go straight to the invitation. Send one when guests need to plan ahead: a destination wedding, a holiday-season date, or relatives who work abroad and have to file leave.

Does everyone who gets a save the date have to be invited?

Yes. A save the date is a promise that an invitation will follow, so send one only to people who are definitely on your final guest list, one per household.

Can we send a save the date through Messenger or Viber?

Yes. A digital save the date sent through Messenger or Viber costs nothing and reaches most guests. Send it privately to each household, and print a few cards for elders who do not use a phone.

What is the difference between a save the date and a wedding invitation?

A save the date only announces the date and the city months in advance. The invitation comes later, 10 to 12 weeks before the wedding, with the times, the venues, the dress code and the RSVP.
